As a 3rd generation real estate investor, I talk real estate until people — mostly my wife and kids — ask me to stop.
In my career so far, I've been an overpaid commercial real estate broker, an underpaid property manager, an unpaid project manager, a strategically successful long-term investor, an accidentally successful flipper, and I currently oversee several real estate portfolios totaling $25,000,000 in value. I've worked for a large national brokerage, had my own firm, worked for a boutique local firm, and launched my own firm again. I've been paid plenty of commissions — fun — and paid out commissions to other brokers — not as fun.
Unlike 90% of the brokers I know, I've signed my personal name on loan docs and gone through the commercial loan process several times for my own investments.
You'd be shocked how many commercial real estate brokers refuse or refrain from investing in real estate personally. That's like a restaurant critic who has never attempted to cook a meal — an expert on grading the final meal quality without knowing what it's like to cut yourself with a paring knife. There are plenty of brokers with more years than me, and property managers with more square footage under management, but not many with my breadth of perspective.
